Meshanticut is the neighborhood around Meshanticut Lake, a mill pond on Meshanticut Brook off Oaklawn Avenue that the city turned into a park in the 1930s. The streets around it, Meshanticut Valley Parkway and the ones running off it, were built up in the 1920s through the 1950s with bungalows, capes, and small colonials on block and stone foundations, and the lots closest to the lake and the brook sit on some of the lowest, wettest ground in Cranston.
That low ground is the problem. The brook drains toward the Pocasset River, and in a wet spring the water table rises into cellars along the parkway before the lake is anywhere near full. In March 2010 the whole Pocasset system was over its banks. The rest of the year it is the usual Cranston story: a sump pump that runs for weeks, a block wall that sweats, and a finished basement that hides the water.
